Vernay still leads, 5th place in Race-2 at Monza

The Frenchman of the Leopard Racing WRT team reaches the Top 5 in the second race in Italy and leads the championship with 113 points. Good performance from teammate Van Lagen,11th in the race.

Following yesterday's Race-1, Race-2 of the 2017 TCR International Series round in Monza took place today at the super-fast Autodromo, the track known worldwide as the 'Temple of Speed'.

As we saw yesterday, the level of the competition between top cars and drivers is very high, with 6 different winners at the wheel of 5 different of cars - Alfa Romeo, Seat, Honda, Audi and Volkswagen - in the previous 7 races.

In today's Race-2, Comini and Vernay had to cope once again with the extra weight of the Success Ballast and the two former teammates found themselves next to each other on the second row of the grid due to the reverse grid rule. The Leopard Racing WRT driver was quick at the start but ended up touching fellow countryman Valente's car at the first chicane, a contact which forced him to run off the track. Comini took advantage of the situation to take the lead ahead of a group of 11 cars, the last one of which was the VW Golf GTI of Jaap Van Lagen.

Vernay was then 3rd in between the two Seat cars of Nash and Oriola, but all three of them had to surrender to Colciago and Vervish between laps 6 and 7. The Italian, also winner of yesterday's Race-1, was in top form on his home track and ended up threatening Comini's lead, but the latter was able to defend the position until the finish line.

Vernay finished the race in fifth place to retain the lead of the championship with 113 points, 16 points ahead of Roberto Colciago and 18 ahead of Stefano Comini. The next round will take place at the Salzburgring, Austria, on June 10-11.

#2 Jean Karl VERNAY:
"These are really good points for the championship! The race was pretty long and I was almost getting bored after a while because there wasn't much I could do: I wasn't able to overtake and I had to defend, The car was really great once again, but just like yesterday top speed was our main problem. I think we can be really happy about the weekend, we did not expect too score as many points as we did, and this is good."

#14 - Jaap VAN LAGEN:
"I had a good start at the beginning of the race. I was behind on the grid because of the two engine changes, so going from P19 to P11 is quite a good result. It wasn't easy to overtake here because we are not are not the quickest in Monza speed-wise. We had some good fights even though P11 is not what we expected but, as I said, it's not bad given the situation. I have to thank the whole team because they did a great job changing the engines and also the little damage on the car we had yesterday. The car went very well today, hopefully we'll have the chance to race together again in the future."
